Winter is Bouncing Around!

Our early spring warm spell really dismantled winter around here, but now winter is back.  There was something nice about those warm days, but at the same time, it seems wrong if it's a sign of things to come.  A few comparisons here from a week or so ago and yesterday.

I took the first of each of these pairs of shots to illustrate how fast the snow was melting 10 days ago, but it also provides good practice for comparison shots.

For a few days there, the snow just seemed to vanish as you watched on the farm fields around here, and the ponds and creeks were rapidly melting.  I thought I'd be able to start working in the garden!

I really should stop using our own back yard for an illustration, but it's so convenient.  I think all those overnight tracks are deer (converging on our cedars in the lower right).   A cold 3 or 4 days over the weekend, and now it's warmed up again!  Supposed to be well above freezing and raining tomorrow - but then we're back to winter temperatures for a while.  Saw and heard my first Red-wing Blackbirds today though, so no matter what the snow says, spring is actually here!

  1. I vastly prefer the snow to still be around this time of the year.

The Rideau River here is having ice break-ups, but that's more because they detonate the ice down near the falls so whatever's upstream will break up as well.

  3. The weather is warm and freezing here too. The wind has been bitterly cold the last few days.

Love the snow on the fields!

  4. Forecasts for our area are calling for a cold front. I laugh. We might drop into the high 40's F overnight.

  7. Your comparisons are well done. I flipped back and forth between them to study different elements of the scenes. :-)

  8. Sometimes the landscape is prettier when covered with snow, but soon it will all melt away, trees will leaf out, flowers will blooms, crops will grow! Beautiful in all seasons!

  9. At least you got a short break. It's been one continuous cold, rainy (and sometimes snowy and icy) winter here in the PNW.

  11. Nice shots to compare the arrival of spring in fits and starts. Same thing here, but without the snow. Cold temps have changed today for +9C and rainy. I take the arrival of the spring birds as a sign of spring more than the weather. The blackbirds are here too, as are the herons.

  12. Great contrast photos. Winter is coming back today then spring tomorrow then winter temps again after that.

  13. We have a cold southerly, flooding further north, and possible snow down south. I like the comparison photos, and the tracks, they come very close to your home.

  14. I'm ready for spring, but we sure could use some snow. We have had too much warm weather, so everything is very dry. We have had a lot of wind and the weather is cool. We generally get heavy snows at the end of March. If that happens this year, at least I will be able to get some good photos. I enjoyed yours.

  15. Nice comparison photos. All predictions for this changing climate include weird weather (alternating droughts and floods, unusually warm followed by very cold and back again) such will be our future.
